    Use of Satellite Radar Bistatic Measurements for Crop Monitoring: A Simulation Study on Corn Fields

    This paper presents a theoretical study of microwave remote sensing of vegetated surfaces. The purpose of this study is to find out if satellite bistatic radar systems can provide a performance, in terms of sensitivity to vegetation geophysical parameters, equal to or greater than the performance of monostatic systems. Up to now, no suitable bistatic data collected over land surfaces are available from satellite, so that the electromagnetic model developed at Tor Vergata University has been used to perform simulations of the scattering coefficient of corn, over a wide range of observation angles at L- and C-band. According to the electromagnetic model, the most promising configuration is the one which measures the VV or HH bistatic scattering coefficient on the plane that lies at the azimuth angle orthogonal with respect to the incidence plane. At this scattering angle, the soil contribution is minimized, and the effects of vegetation growth are highlighted

    Study of multifrequency sensitivity to soil moisture variations in the lower Bermejo basin

    In this paper, a sensitivity analysis to soil moisture variations as a rain effect has been performed at several microwave bands over the lower Bermejo basin, a subtropical area of Argentina mostly spread by moderately dense forests. Parameters such as emissivity and Polarization Index have been considered to carry out the study. In particular, the performance of L-band SMOS measurements has been compared with C and X band AMSR-E one, highlighting the better achievement of the lower frequencies due to the weaker interaction with the vegetation structures. This work intends to give a contribution in the subject of soil moisture sensitivity, which is a preliminary step in the development of retrieval algorithms.Fil: Vittucci, Cristina.     An Introduction to the HydroGNSS GNSS Reflectometry Remote Sensing Mission

    HydroGNSS (Hydrology using Global Navigation Satellite System reflections) has been selected as the second European Space Agency (ESA) Scout earth observation mission to demonstrate the capability of small satellites to deliver science. This article summarizes the case for HydroGNSS as developed during its system consolidation study. HydroGNSS is a high-value dual small satellite mission, which will prove new concepts and offer timely climate observations that supplement and complement the existing observations and are high in ESAs earth observation scientific priorities. The mission delivers the observations of four hydrological essential climate variables as defined by the global climate observing system using the new technique of GNSS reflectometry. These will cover the world's land mass to 25 km resolution, with a 15-day revisit. The variables are soil moisture, inundation or wetlands, freeze/thaw state, and above-ground biomass

    Scouting for Climate Variable with Small Satellites

    HydroGNSS is a small satellite mission under the new ESA Scout programme tapping into NewSpace, within ESA’s FutureEO programme. The mission will use an innovative GNSS-Reflectometry instrument to collect parameters related to the Essential Climate Variables (ECVs): soil moisture, inundation, freeze/thaw, biomass, ocean wind speed and sea ice extent. GNSS-Reflectometry is a type of bistatic radar utilizing abundant GNSS signals as signals of opportunity, empowering small satellites to provide measurement quality associated with larger satellites. The HydroGNSS instrument introduces novel measurements compared to its predecessors on UKSA TechDemoSat-1 and NASA CYGNSS missions. These include: the acquisition of Galileo(E1) reflections, and firsts such as dual- polarization, complex ‘coherent channel’ (amplitude/phase) and second frequency (L5/E5a) acquisitions. These measurements enable HydroGNSS to innovate the L2 products, e.g. improving the ground resolution and soil moisture measurement, as dual-polarized reflections allow the discrimination of vegetation effects from soil moisture. HydroGNSS will: ● Complement and potentially gap fill other missions sensing soil moisture e.g. ESA’s SMOS and NASA’s SMAP missions. ● Complement ESA’s Biomass mission addressing coverage restrictions over Europe, North and Central America. ● Expand GNSS-Reflectometry techniques. ● Lay the foundations for a future constellation capable of offering continuity in high spatial-temporal resolution observations of the Earth’s weather and climate

    Remote Sensing of Forest Biomass Using GNSS Reflectometry

    In this study, the capability of Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry in evaluating forest biomass from space has been investigated by using data coming from the TechDemoSat-1 (TDS-1) mission of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. and from the Cyclone Satellite System (CyGNSS) mission of NASA. The analysis has been first conducted using TDS-1 data on a local scale, by selecting five test areas located in different parts of the Earth's surface. The areas were chosen as examples of various forest coverages, including equatorial and boreal forests. Then, the analysis has been extended by using CyGNSS to a global scale, including any type of forest coverage. The peak of the Delay Doppler Map calibrated to retrieve an "equivalent" reflectivity has been exploited for this investigation and its sensitivity to forest parameters has been evaluated by a direct comparison with vegetation optical depth (VOD) derived from the Soil Moisture Active Passive L-band radiometer, with a pantropical aboveground biomass (AGB) map and then with a tree height (H) global map derived from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System installed on-board the ICEsat satellite. The sensitivity analysis confirmed the decreasing trend of the observed equivalent reflectivity for increasing biomass, with correlation coefficients 0.31 ≤ R ≤ 0.54 depending on the target parameter (VOD, AGB, or H) and on the considered dataset (local or global). These correlations were not sufficient to retrieve the target parameters by simple inversion of the direct relationships. The retrieval has been therefore based on Artificial Neural Networks making it possible to add other inputs (e.g., the incidence angle, the signal to noise ratio, and the lat/lon information in case of global maps) to the algorithm. Although not directly correlated to the biomass, these inputs helped in improving the retrieval accuracy. The algorithm was tested on both the selected areas and globally, showing a promising ability to retrieve the target parameter, either AGB or H, with correlation coefficients R ≃ 0.8

    Vegetation optical depth at L-band and above ground biomass in the tropical range: Evaluating their relationships at continental and regional scales

    Abstract The relationship between vegetation optical depth (VOD) retrieved by L-band SMOS radiometer and forest above ground biomass (AGB) was investigated in tropical areas of Africa and South America. VOD was retrieved from the latest version of level 2 SMOS algorithm, while reference AGB was obtained from a pantropical database, encompassing a large number of ground plot data derived from field surveys conducted on both continents. In Africa and South-America, VOD increased with AGB, reaching saturation at about 350 Mg ha−1. The strength of the relation was improved selecting VOD data in appropriate seasons, characterized by a higher dynamic range of values. The capability of VOD data to estimate AGB was further investigated using Random Forest decision trees, adding to VOD selected climate variables from the Climatic Research Unit (temperature, potential evapotranspiration, and precipitation) and water deficit data, and validating regression tests with ground data from the reference AGB database. The results for the five analyzed years indicate that the best estimates of AGB are obtained by the joined use of VOD and potential evapotranspiration input data, but all climate variables brought an improvement in AGB estimates. AGB estimates were relatively stable for the considered period, with limited variations possibly due to changes in biomass and to data quality of VOD and of climate variables. The VOD signal and estimated AGB were also analyzed according to ecological homogeneous units (ecoregions), evidencing data clusters, partially overlapped to each other, in the VOD - AGB plane
